Evaluation

This has possibly been my favourite brief so far, I have loved it and I have learned a lot. I thought I knew a lot about dyslexia but after researching it so much I discovered a lot of things I didn’t know, and therefore I found out a lot of things about myself. I started off in a crit not know what I was going to do, all I knew is that I wanted to do something based on type, and then it came to my turn to talk and I just came up with this idea out of nowhere to make a booklet about dyslexia, and then after doing some ideas, I decided on a poster and I knew I wanted it to not be obviously about dyslexia, I knew I wanted it to have some sort of clever insight where people without dyslexia could know how it feels. So it is good that I stuck to that idea I think because I have a habit of changing half way through.

The app I admit was not thought about very much and I wish I spent more time developing it but I think It was a good idea to have for people with irlens syndrome as it helps people read and there isn’t any app that does this so it is unique and not something simply for entertainment.

The posters were my favourites as they were exactly what I set out to do, and when I first realised they actually worked by looking through the glasses I was so happy and I played on that idea throughout the book as well. The only thing I regret is that I couldn’t print them big because I was too late to book a print slot and I think it would have been so much nicer if it was on A1 sheet and much better quality.

The booklet I designed I had a lot of practise with type, which I really needed, and the main thing I wanted was every page to look like a set which it did. I had to also print this in 203 so I couldn’t print it double sided which would have been a lot better and also the was I put it together, the front cover is a lot bigger then the rest of my booklet but I had a lot of difficulty with this a the final book I printed was the 8th copy, I kept gluing the pages or cutting them out wrong so I wasted a lot of time by making silly mistakes. I feel that the booklet could have had more information about dyslexia but I found it really difficult to put things into my own words, I guess it would have been nice to make it sound as if I was talking to the reader and made it more personal but writing isn’t my specialty so I feel I should of spent more time perfecting this.

Final boards

You cant see it very good on here because its small but the photographs I took are really crap and had alot of glare from the light so I had to photoshop all the glowing white speckles off. It took alot longer then i should be spending on 1 photo but it has made a big improvement in my poinion.

These are my 4 boards for my final crit, I only have 4 which is not enough but I didn't have much else to put on them which immediately shows I have too little range. After seeing everyone elses boards I now knw that on my boards I need more places to put my poster as I only have an example of a bus stop and an iphone app.

My desktop is full of work and screenshots for this brief, I always know my blog is going well when my desktop is full.
I have written myself  checklist and I will follow it through this time as time is running out big time.

/Add assitate paper to book
/Make poster that assitate will work on
/Amazon ipad app
/More boards, 1st board with logo, 2nd with concept, 3rd Target audience, 4 Why I did this...etc...
/Photoshop posters around cities, bus stops etc
/Print book on different stock
/Add another colour to book
/Post everything and evaluate
/On boards have hirachy eg. one image big and the rest small rather then all the same.
/Make bookmarks.

Final crit

In the crit today I got alot of helpful feedback. My boards I admit were rushed and had a few things missing like the blue and red poster and my booklet was only printed on the laser printer so not great quality. However the 3 people that looked at my work all seemed to understand my project which is a good sign because I hardly ever annotate things I just upload images. But they said I lack in range of things and Skane gave me a really good idea of aswell as an iphone app i should do one for those Amazon ipad things that are specially designed for reading books. Also they comented on the stock I used and said I should have the booklet off white aswall as the poster which makes sence. Also, they werent sure of my target audience, they thought it was for dyslexic people telling them about dyslexia but really its for people who know dyslexic people but dont actually have it themselves, so I must make that clear on one of my boards. Also, an original idea I had was to make bookmarks, so this is an idea I will take further.

New Appf

Here is the new and final logo for the app. I have kept the name 'dislecsia' so that it goes back to the book and also the '!' which shows an element from the logo, so you can see that it is a set.

My iPhone has revolutionised my reading

I was hopeless at school, messy and terrible at spelling. And although the term dyslexia was not something anyone noticed until much later in my life. When I did understand I was dyslectic it immediately explained a lot of things. My writing often had a jumbled logic. Spell checker didn’t even recognise my words. In fact, my word blindness carried such a conviction that I sometimes found myself staring incredulously at the red line underneath words, before finally realising the “during” did not begin with a “J”.

I like to read but I read slowly. Books have always been a struggle as I suffer from Irlen syndrome, which causes black text on a white page difficult to read as the letters become distorted and sometimes impossible to read. Irlen syndrome is very common in most dyslexics.

I got an iphone for Christmas and like many, I spent all my time downloading apps. I downloaded a classic books app but couldn’t read it because of my Irlen syndrome. One way to get round Irlen is to have a different coloured background then white, so I had all these coloured acetate papers stuck on my phone while I read all the classic books that I missed out on as a child.

This brought me to an idea of making my own app, which changes the white background to a colour. As Iren syndrome is common in dyslexic people I figured it would benefit many.

I was so impressed with my new idea that I contacted “The British Dyslexia association” and they sponsored me to make this new app.

So why do I have a coloured background on my phone instead of on a book?

First, an ordinary page of text on a phone is split into about 4 pages. The spacing seems generous and because of this I don’t get lost on the page.

Second, the handset’s brightness makes it easier to take in words. Many dyslexics have problems with “crowding” where they’re distracted by the words surrounding the word they’re trying to read.
